Empowering Kids to Manage Their Emotions: A Framework for Parents

As parents, it's important to help our children learn how to regulate their emotions and manage their feelings in a healthy way. One effective method for doing this is to create a framework that helps guide our interactions with our children when they are experiencing big feelings and strong emotions.


Here is a simple framework that parents can use as a tool to help their young children with emotional regulation:


  • Naming and validating their feelings: When children are experiencing strong emotions, it's important to help them understand and name what they are feeling. This can be done by simply stating, "It looks like you are feeling (angry, sad, happy, etc.)." Validation is key here, as it helps children feel heard and understood, which can go a long way in helping them feel more in control of their emotions.

  • Encouraging healthy expression of emotions: Once children have learned to name and identify their feelings, it's important to encourage them to find healthy ways to express those emotions. This can include things like talking about their feelings, drawing or writing about them, or finding physical outlets like dancing or running.

  • Teaching coping skills: When children are overwhelmed by strong emotions, it's important to help them develop coping skills that they can use to manage those emotions in a healthy way. This can include things like deep breathing, counting to ten, or using positive self-talk.

  • Providing a supportive and understanding environment: As parents, it's important to create an environment that is supportive and understanding when our children are experiencing strong emotions. This can include things like offering a comforting touch or simply being present and available to listen.


By using this framework as a tool, parents can help their young children learn how to regulate their emotions and manage their feelings in a healthy way. This is an important skill that will serve them well throughout their lives.
